| Safe Swim Defense/ Safety Float |
|
All adults participating in a watercraft activity must have completed both Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. The Leader-in-Charge must be at least 21 years of age and must be able to meet the requirements of the merit badge for the watercraft involved.
It is required that each youth participant complete Safety Afloat training, including at least 3 hours of instruction in the safe use and handling of the watercraft to be used in the activity. It is also recommended that they complete Safe Swim Defense training. While the training is valid for two years, swim tests for all water activities must be renewed annually. |

| OLS for Webelos Leaders |
|
Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OLS for Webelos Leaders) At least one Webelos Leader must have successfully completed Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders, and must be present on the campout, for any Webelos Den wishing to go camping by themselves. For Webelos Dens camping with a Troop, someone from EITHER the troop or the Webelos Den must have successfully completed either OLS for Scoutmasters or OLS for Webelos Leaders (For Webelos Dens camping with their Pack on a Pack campout, only a BALOO trained adult is required). Like BALOO, the name of the adult leader trained in OLS for Webelos Leaders will be required on each Tour Permit or the permit request will be denied. Any questions on this new policy should be directed to Mike Koehne. |
| Basic Training courses required to be considered "Trained" |
|
| Simply stated, training courses can be divided into two categories; Basic and
Supplemental. To be considered a "trained" adult volunteer, only the Basic courses
are required to be completed. They are as follows:
Fast Start Training - Must
be completed by all adult leaders and committee members whether
in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venture programs. The course is offered ‘on-line'
on the Council website and takes about 30 minutes to complete. The
program specific tapes can also be checked out, free of charge, at
the Council Office for unit presentations.
New Leader Essentials - Must
be completed by all adult leaders and committee members whether
in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venture programs. The course is offered
at various times throughout the year (times and locations are available
on both the Council and District websites). The course is about 2 hours
long.
Cub Leader Specific - Must be completed
by all adult leaders and committee members involved in the
Cub Scout program. The course is offered at various times throughout
the year (times and locations are available on both the Council and
District websites) and is about 3 hours long. The first two hours go
over various aspects of the program that are common to all adult cub
leader positions while the last hour is spent in job specific small
groups for Tiger Den Leaders, Wolf/Bear Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders,
Cubmasters, Committee Chair/Members. If the adult leader later assumes
a new role in the Pack, he/she is only required to attend the last
hour of this course in the specific small group to be considered as "trained" in
the new position.
Boy Scout Leader Specific - Must
be completed by all adult leaders and committee members involved
in the Boy Scout program. The course is offered at various times throughout
the year (times and locations are available on both the Council and
District websites) and is about 6.5 hours long. *
• Note: For committee members, there exists the option
to take Troop Committee training (if it is offered) to satisfy
the training requirement. This course is only 4 hours long.
Introduction to Basic Outdoor Leader Skills - Must
be completed by all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters.
This is a ‘hands-on' outdoor camping experience and skills course covering
map and compass, orienteering, first aid, knife and axe, fire building,
cooking, knots and lashings, animal ID, tree and plant ID, Leave No
Trace, proper flag etiquette and more. The course is usually offered
twice a year, coordinated by the Council training team, and runs from
Friday evening to mid-Sunday afternoon.
If you are unable to attend the training sessions offered by our District,
you can attend training offered by other Districts, as well as other Councils,
to satisfy the training requirements. However, upon completing the course,
please insure that you retain the signed course completion card. At your
first opportunity, you then need to advise Mike Koehne, Chanonee District
Training Chairman, of the course completion to insure that your records
are correct (we have no way of transferring records from one Council, or
District, to another so it is imperative that you advise Mike Koehne when
courses are completed outside of the District). |
| Pack Trainer |
|
| This is a relatively new position designed to assist the Cub Scout Pack Committee in the training of all new leaders. The Pack Trainer, once certified by the District Training Chairman, can certify new Den Leaders (Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos), Committee Members, Assistant Cubmasters and Cubmasters. They can also be certified to teach Youth Protection. This is a Pack Committee position that all Pack's should strive to have filled. For more information, contact Mike Koehne. |
| Youth Protection Training |
|
| All adults camping with Cub Scouts, regardless of where the camping is being done, must complete Youth Protection Training. For Boy Scouts, any adult staying overnight with the Scouts at a Scout owned facility must complete Youth Protection training. This training is now available on-line at the council web site (www.threefirescouncil.org); however, the "course completion card" printout function is not working. To get a course completion card, you will need to contact Mike Koehne with your name, address, phone number, troop/pack/crew number and course completion date. The Council office provides a printout once a month to the Council Training Committee with the names of those who have completed the course, but only on a council basis, not by District. Once the course completion has been confirmed, Mike Koehne will be able to issue a completion card. Should you need one sooner, special arrangements can be made to do so. |
