We've made the date shift for District JLT to May 7th at 1st Presbyterian Church in Wheaton. Course will run roughly 9 to 4p.m. The OA is hosting and you should be getting info from the Chapter Chief, Brian Payne shortly. We'll have an SM mtg sometime 1st week of April to slot in who would like to teach which sessions. We'll also be offering adult CPR by an AHA certified instructor, 4 hrs, $25.00/each. Check w/ your adults as we need this for some tour permits. I think this course will be a great thing for our scouts! Thanks for your support! Contact me w/ questions, comments, ideas... | Basic Training courses required to be considered |
Simply stated, training courses can be divided into two categories; Basic and Supplemental. To be considered a "trained" adult volunteer, only the Basic courses are required to be completed. They are as follows: Fast Start Training - Must be completed by all adult leaders and committee members whether in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity or Venture programs. The course is offered on-line at the Online Training Center (www.myscouting.org) and takes about 30 minutes to complete. The program specific tapes can also be checked out, free of charge, at the Council Office for unit presentations. Youth Protection Training - Required for all registered leaders and must be renewed every two years. New leaders must complete this training prior to submitting their leadership application. This training is meant to keep both the leader and the youth safe by clearly delineating the do's and don't's of dealing with youth. The course is offered on-line at the Online Training Center (www.myscouting.org) or it may be taken as part of a District or Council training course. This is Scouting - This course replaced the old 'New Leaders Essentials' and must be completed by all adult leaders and committee members whether in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venture programs. The course is offered on-line at the Online Training Center (www.myscouting.org) and takes about one hour to complete. Cub Leader Specific - Must be completed by all adult leaders and committee members involved in the Cub Scout program. The course is offered at various times throughout the year (times and locations are available on both the Council and District websites) and is about 3 hours long. The first two hours go over various aspects of the program that are common to all adult cub leader positions while the last hour is spent in job specific small groups for Tiger Den Leaders, Wolf/Bear Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Committee Chair/Members. If the adult leader later assumes a new role in the Pack, he/she is only required to attend the last hour of this course in the specific small group to be considered as "trained" in the new position. Boy Scout Leader Specific - Must be completed by all adult leaders and committee members involved in the Boy Scout program. The course is offered at various times throughout the year (times and locations are available on both the Council and District websites) and is about 6.5 hours long. * • Note: For committee members, there exists the option to take Troop Committee training (if it is offered) to satisfy the training requirement. This course is only 4 hours long. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills - Must be completed by all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. This is a ‘hands-on' outdoor camping experience and skills course covering map and compass, orienteering, first aid, knife and axe, fire building, cooking, knots and lashings, animal ID, tree and plant ID, Leave No Trace, proper flag etiquette and more. The course is usually offered twice a year, coordinated by the Council training team, and runs from Friday evening to mid-Sunday afternoon. Varsity Scout Leaders - Must be completed by all Varsity Coaches and Assistant Coaches. Coaches must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Venture Crew Leaders - A five session course that must be completed by all Venture Leaders and their Assistants. If the crew has an outdoor activities program, the leaders must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. If you are unable to attend the training sessions offered by our District, you can attend training offered by other Districts, as well as other Councils, to satisfy the training requirements. However, upon completing the course, please insure that you retain the signed course completion card. At your first opportunity, you then need to advise Ron Fletcher, Chanonee District Training Chairman, of the course completion to insure that your records are correct (we have no way of transferring records from one Council, or District, to another so it is imperative that you advise Mike Koehne when courses are completed outside of the District). |

Training Academy will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2010 and will be offering training in over 100 different skills, classes, etc. It is a day of fun, fellowship and learning. Don't miss out! And for those who have completed their basic training, make sure to sign up for Wood Badge and Okpik. Learn how to enhance your leadership skills with both of these classes. |
| Cub Leader Specific Training 'On-Line' |
| Cub Scout position specific training is now being offered online at www.myscouting.org. While your training staff still prefers to you do your training 'face to face,' it is not always possible to do so. So, for those people that can't find the time to go to classes, this is an alternative. There is now absolutely no excuse not be trained. Training offered is Tiger Den Leader, Wolf Den Leader, Bear Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cub master, Committee, and Pack Training in separate modules. Contact your District Training Team for additional information. |
| Youth Protection Training |
| Effective immediately, any adult leader having direct contact with the Scouts MUST complete Youth Protection training. If the adult leader has not received Youth Protection training within the last two years, they will not be allowed to continue serving as a leader and will not be re-registered. Further, depending on which leaders have not taken the training, the unit may not be rechartered. After January 1, 2011, all adults coming into contract with the Scouts will have to have completed Youth Protection training. This training is available on-line at www.myscouting.org. If you are not a member, you must register. There is no cost to do so. Additional information is available on the Council website www.threefirescouncil.org. Units can still have one of the District trainers do the training should you want to have your entire committee complete the training at the same time. Should you have any questions, or wish to set up a unit training session, please contact the District Training Chair for additional information. |
| Safe Swim Defense/ Safety Float |
All adults participating in a watercraft activity must have completed both Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. The Leader-in-Charge must be at least 21 years of age and must be able to meet the requirements of the merit badge for the watercraft involved.
It is required that each youth participant complete Safety Afloat training, including at least 3 hours of instruction in the safe use and handling of the watercraft to be used in the activity. It is also recommended that they complete Safe Swim Defense training. While the training is valid for two years, swim tests for all water activities must be renewed annually. |

| OLS for Webelos Leaders |
Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OLS for Webelos Leaders) At least one Webelos Leader must have successfully completed Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders, and must be present on the campout, for any Webelos Den wishing to go camping by themselves. For Webelos Dens camping with a Troop, someone from EITHER the troop or the Webelos Den must have successfully completed either OLS for Scoutmasters or OLS for Webelos Leaders (For Webelos Dens camping with their Pack on a Pack campout, only a BALOO trained adult is required). Like BALOO, the name of the adult leader trained in OLS for Webelos Leaders will be required on each Tour Permit or the permit request will be denied. Any questions on this new policy should be directed to Mike Koehne. |
